The Shampoo Drop

An independent screening program for shampoo — the follow-up to the 136-product study we announced in March 2026. We sample the air above the liquid and let the instrument report which volatile compounds show up.

Screening is in progress. Nothing publishes until it clears our confirmation standards — members see it first.

The story so far

The study is real. The Drop is what happens next.

In March 2026, TPR announced the most comprehensive independent shampoo study conducted in the United States: 136 products across mass-market, baby, salon, celebrity, medicated, textured-hair, and store brands — roughly 95% of what America actually buys — with zero brand sponsorships.

  • Standard methods only — every method has established regulatory acceptance.
  • Three-party chain of custody — purchase, screening, and blind-coding steps stay separated.
  • Identical test suite per product — each product in the panel receives the same suite.
  • Split-sample verification — retained samples support confirmation or challenge work.
  • Right of reply before publication — manufacturers get a response window before reports go live.

How the screening works

Seal, warm, read.

01 Seal

A sample of each shampoo goes into a sealed vial. Nothing added, nothing filtered.

02 Warm

Gentle heat drives volatile compounds into the air above the liquid — the headspace. That air is what gets sampled.

03 Read

The instrument separates the vapor into individual compounds. Anything notable is flagged for confirmatory testing before any report goes public.

What a flag means

A reason to run confirmatory testing on that sample. It's the start of an evidence trail, not the end of one.

What a flag doesn't mean

A verdict. We don't hand down safety verdicts — we publish what was measured, in which sample, with the method printed next to it.

Our headspace instrument is completing validation now. No screening result publishes until it meets the confirmation standards in our methodology.

How we test

Evidence tiers

A report never claims more than its evidence.

Lab backed

An instrument measured this exact product sample. The method is shown with the result.

Source backed

Grounded in regulatory or published third-party data covering this product or its source.

Label only

What the manufacturer discloses. Useful — and clearly marked as unverified.

Insufficient data

When we don't know, the report says so. No score dressed up as knowledge.

Every product report in the app carries its tier, so you always know what's behind a number.
